It seems like plenty of pro-athletes have found their hobby outside of their career. So many current and former pro-athletes have launched podcasts withing the last few years. Newly signed Sixers shooting guard, J.J. Redick joins the list of athletes who offer off the court entertainment.

When Redick published his new episode of his podcast to the public, the big story was his special guest. He talked on the phone with Sixers General Manager, aka the guy who signed him, Bryan Colangelo. They had a very general conversation and Colangelo told him he would like to keep Redick around for more then a year if he does well, blah, blah, blah. But that was not really the big story. The big story was Redick revealing that he turned down more money from the Houston Rockets to play for Philadelphia? What?

Not about the money…

An NBA free agent that goes where the opportunity is rather then money is tough to come by. NBA teams throw millions at players that you may never even heard of during free agency. Redick is 33 years old, so why would he take less money to go to a team who haven’t been playoff contender since 2011?

His main point was that the Rockets did not offer him the same opportunity as the Sixers did. If Redick were to go to Houston, he was guaranteed to be a player who comes off of the bench. In Philadelphia, the opportunity to be a key player on this team is wide open.

Lets not forget about the process though either. The Sixers may have been hard to watch the last few seasons (or five) but it is no secret that the days of tanking are coming to a complete stop. They may be young but they have plenty of talent to show for.

He wasted no time tweeting out “Trust the Process” after it was announced he would officially sign his one-year, $23 million contract with the Sixers. Believe it or not, it is an exciting time to join this young squad. Redick will come in and be relied on for his specialty in shooting. He also offers the veteran leadership that the Sixers have lacked for some time now.

While most of Philadelphia welcomed Redick in with open arms, he still had a lot of skeptics in the city. Knowing this fact that he turned down more money for better opportunity should help you view Redick a little bit differently. Buckle up, its going to be a hell of a season Sixers fans.
