Don’t build a business. Build a philosophy.
Millions of people out there have great ideas. For those who want to economically succeed start shaping a business model to succeed. They have found a way to earn money from the market. Then there are those who are weird enough to do the opposite approach. They’re called philosophers.
For me there are three types of entrepreneurs. One who build a business out of numbers with their business model. They don’t innovate although they tend to think they do, but they have found a smarter way to do a better business of an existing market. The second type is one who has a great idea to improve the general market with something new but only manages to briefly being noticed, because afterwards it’s all business and numbers or they got acquired by others without the same philosophy. The third one is very interesting to me: The very few ones who are building something purely out of a philosophy. Like this place, medium.
We are forgotting more and more about the meaning of being an entrepreneur and why the term “entrepreneur” really came to existence. Great historic entrepreneurs are great philosophers. Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Steve Jobs, Shakespeare…
You might think none of them are truly entrepreneurs, but only philosophers. That is exactly where you are wrong. Being a true entrepreneur is being a true philosopher. What you need as an entrepreneur in todays market is being philosophic about what you want to achieve and work towards becoming a philosopher. Nothing greater can be achieved in the market. Bill Gates is rich in money but are a man who failed at sharing a philosophy. He is the perfect example of an entrepreneur that is driven by a business model.
Many companies have their “strategy” section, “vision”, “mission”, great “pricings”, “references” very impressive stuff — but rarely we see “Our philosophy” section. Keep in mind, vision is NOT the same as philosophy.
I personally can’t see myself as a philosopher, I’m just a young and occasionally blank 25 year old boy, but I have a strong philosophic approach on what I am working on with other amazing and down to earth people who share the same philosophy.
We embrace our actual life, not our online identity, we embrace intimacy — being connected to people we actually spend time with and share our lives with, we embrace practicallity that makes the best out of our day, we embrace a direct simplicity that gives us an inner peace, we embrace stories which we can tell to our families and our friends in life. Not through superficial status updates, not through long blog posts, but in a way that is more human. We embrace the meaning and beauty of life itself.
In the end my life doesn’t need a thousands of “friends” or “followers”. My family and my actual friends are enough. With them I experience the beauty of life worth remembering and telling and worth leaving.
We want through our work spread our philosophy and continuoesly refine it by learning it with you. Our users. We are building a business out of a philosophy. Focusing on our philosophy the business part will come to help us maintain, spread and develop our work.
