Thank you for writing this. I don’t know Erica Baker directly, but I had a few interactions with her on Google+ and always enjoyed it. This is an excellent piece,but this quote is so true.

I know I’m lucky, and the benefit of this (who you know) so many times over. Meritocracy assumes a baseline that isn’t there. To hire “the best people” you constantly have to challenge your assumptions on why someone is the best because in most cases it comes down to “I know this guy, he’s good.
