The Brexit Party, the RCP and Enniskillen.
Alka Sehgal Cuthbert and Aileen Quinton are both on the same Brexit Party list in London. According to the Daily Beast the former is an ex member of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) while the latter is “an outspoken campaigner for victims of terrorism, her mother Alberta having been one of 12 killed in the IRA Enniskillen bombing in 1987”.
The Enniskillen bombing took place on 8 November 1987 during a Remembrance Sunday ceremony. The IRA bomb exploded close to the town’s war memorial resulting in the deaths of 11 civilians and a police officer.
The bombing led to condemnation across the political spectrum in both the UK and Ireland with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher saying “It’s really desecrating the dead and a blot on mankind” while in the Seanad Éireann, Senator Maurice Manning described people’s “total revulsion”.
However, the RCP (whose policy was to give unconditional support to the IRA’s bombing campaign) were unrepentant. In their analysis (the next step 43, 20 November 1987), they stated their position quite clearly.
As stated in the article, their view on IRA violence was unapologetic — “While we always regret the death of non-combatants, we refuse to criticise the IRA’s military campaign”.
As Claire Fox is being held to account for the RCP’s view on the Warrington bombing, I think similar questions will be asked of Alka Sehgal Cuthbert. It is not just Enniskillen, of course, as there were many IRA bombings carried out in London (where she wants to be an MEP) which resulted in civilian and military deaths.
There is one very important question which needs to be answered though by Nigel Farage and the Brexit Party. What kind of vetting policy for candidates did they have which put Alka Sehgal Cuthbert (ex RCP member) and Aileen Quinton (an anti-terrorism campaigner whose mother was murdered by the IRA) on the same EU election list? This is really a grotesque obscenity.
