Without goals, I can guarantee you are not living the life you want to be living. Before I set goals, I was doing what everyone else thought I should do. I was living an accidental life. The terrible truth; I didn’t even realize I was drifting along doing what other people thought was important. And if you don’t have goals, recorded and reviewed goals, you are drifting too.

I have spent the last ten years of my life learning how to best as a ‘goal-setter,’ and a ‘goal-achiever.’ My decade worth of discovery has lead me to understand three reasons to set goals. These three reasons, have changed the way I set goals and allowed me to complete all but one of my goals this year.

As we wrap up 2017, it is so important to start looking ahead to the next year. If we don’t do it now, we will reach February and not even try to set goals. The following are the three powerful and simple reasons you need for setting goals in 2018.

If you know what your purpose in life is, you need to set up goals to help make the most of your purpose. If you don’t know your purpose, you can discover your purpose. A lot of times, you have been on the journey toward your purpose for some time. Your purpose will inform your priorities too.

Once you know your purpose, you need to have tracks to run on. Otherwise, you will end up doing all these unimportant tasks. Setting goals provides the structured support to live out your purpose in life and create the life you want to live. The more specific the goals, the better clarity you will have for your direction.

Without action, goals become dreams and disappointments. Achieving my goals did not start to happen until I began taking focused action. And when I stared achieving my goals, I learned that I could do so much more.

When we have purpose, we can set our direction. When we have direction, we can take action. And when we take action, we achieve.

These three powerful, yet simple reasons are why you need to set goals for the upcoming year. You do not need to live a life that drifts. You do not need to live your personal status quo. Now, you have the reasons to make a change. Today is the day that you can start moving in the direction of your purpose.

Take Your First Action Now

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” -Pablo Picasso

Your first action is a simple one, but is is often forgotten. Take out your phone, planner, or pull up your calendar. It’s time to schedule your time to create goals. That’s right, set a date and time or several of them to create your goals. If you don’t take the time to do this first step, you may never set goals.

What I typically do is take a few of my lunch hours to go to a coffee shop to start. I review the current year’s goals. Then I review my life plan, and start into my goals for the present year. Sometimes I build off of the previous year’s goals. Other times, I a come up with new ones that align more with my life plan.

But without scheduling this time, I would not make goal-setting happen.
