The stories that others have loved most

Hi, I’m JR “Jack” Heimbigner!

I have been writing for nearly four years now and have hundreds of posts all over the internet. However, I wanted to make things easier for you, so I have consolidated all of these stories down to the ones that have been most helpful to others, along with a few of my personal favorites.

Chances are, you found me by reading one of these two posts:

These three pieces have had a lot of readers stop by, but you’ll come to find out more about me and why I write with the following pieces.

But first, a little more about me…

I am a husband, father, author, creator, and dedicated friend. …

Everyone starts at zero

If you write on Medium long enough, you can eventually get to 1,000 followers.

But why take months or even years when you can do it in weeks.

My journey to 1k followers was one that took about a year. Since then, I have grown to 4.2k in about two years.

What I have learned is how to continually add followers to your Medium without being slimy about it.

In this story, I’m going to share everything I have learned, done, and continue to do to grow my following. You might want to bookmark this to come back to it later. Did you bookmark? …

Sooner or later you are going to run out

I ran out of inspiration today. Flat out, I didn’t have anything new and exciting to write about. Some people would call this writer’s block. But I’m convinced this is part of being a writer.

While we have tons of ideas flowing through our minds at any given time, the “inspiration” of writing will dry up sometimes.

Not because we don’t have ideas. We have plenty of those. Sometimes though, we lose the desire to open up those ideas to put them into words on a page. We like the idea, we don’t like the work.

This is when inspiration fails us.

Where you work impacts the way you work

If you hate your workspace, you are not going to get anything done. Likewise, if you love your workspace, you are going to be extremely productive. There is no in-between on this.

People might tell you that where you work doesn’t matter, but I think those people are in denial. After all, we are seeing how this plays out every day with people who work from home. Many people who love working from home have a workspace they love. …

Breaking down Romans 6:23 and understanding the invitation

Do you think most people or good, bad, or somewhere in between?

Where do you think you fall all this spectrum? Good, bad, somewhere in between? Over the years, I have asked these questions to a lot of people. Most people answer that they are somewhere in between. Typically like this:

“Well, I’m a pretty good person overall, I don’t (name something that breaks one of the ten commandments).”

To be completely honest with you, when someone asked me these questions in February of 2004, I answered the same way. I wouldn’t say that I was a bad person, but I didn’t think I was all that good either. …

Wisdom & Consequences

Featured Story: Life’s Only Teacher — Wisdom & Consequences

By: Adam Hillis

Learning comes from one of two places: wisdom or consequences. Either we’re taught from others who already have the knowledge, or we learn from the consequences of our choices.

The more “pleasant” way to learn is from others, as lessons from consequences are often taught through pain. The emotions felt in our painful experiences imprint lessons into our psyche. Emotions are the printer, pain is the ink, our heart and mind the paper.

While it may be more pleasant to learn from others, others can fail us. …

They are bad for you and here’s why

This year, I am going to stop reading the articles that say, “This is how I made X amount of money on X platform.” Want to know why? Because they are killing me. And chances are, they are killing you too.

It drives me crazy and I hate it. Because I always click. Read the same, lame old tips. Then I move on feeling cheated.

Especially because I know that most of these writers have succeeded, but I’m not convinced it’s because they ‘write a lot, publish with the big publications, and all of that other stuff you read over and over again.’ …

The Productivity Dad Podcast

Season Two — Episode Five

There are a lot of things that people struggle with when it comes to productivity. Yet, one of the most common productivity struggles is email. In fact, I have found often enough that people don’t know how to get control over the email so they just give up and let the inbox fill.

After all, my wife has 15,000 emails in her inbox.

And she has no intention of deleting them any time soon. …

Instead of starting things this year, why not quit some things

I’m not good at quitting things. If I am 100%, completely honest, I actually hate quitting things. Whether they are good or bad, I would much rather try and deal with all the things I am doing at the same time instead of quitting things.

Over the last few years, I have been someone who continually adds things to my plate. As I do this, I find myself failing to succeed at any of the things because I overwhelm myself with so many tasks and goals. This year, I am trying to do something different. …
