Couldn’t agree more. Based on my experience in the programming community, I’d say the conversion rate is about 95 per cent, more than any other programming language, IMHO. I know very few people who’ve learned Smalltalk and didn’t like the language enormously. It’s such a beautiful language!
The “live coding” IDE is also a huge selling point. It makes programming so effortless and fun. And hugely productive, too, based on Capers Jones’ seminal study: Function Points as a Universal Software Metric (jump to page 45). Smalltalk is twice as productive as Ruby, two and a half times as productive as Python, and three times as productive as JavaScript! I can personally vouch for this.
