If Britain’s integrity fails the democrats of Hong Kong will bleed for it.

So long as Hong Kong remains free from the control of the Central Committee of the Communist Party it represents a threat to the tight control of the information space within mainland China.

Since the communists took power in 1949 Hong Kong has remained a site of dissent, free from mainland control, circulating contra-party books about Mao Zedong and publishing extensively following the suppression of Tiananmen in 1989. When in 1997 Britain withdrew from Hong Kong in the Sino-British handover treaty Britain and China both agreed to guarantee judicial freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly under the ‘one…

All hail to the fighters of Hong Kong who stand defiantly at the heart of their parliament today. The day marking the celebration of Hong Kong’s independence has become a beacon of desperate resistance, with protestors today breaking away from larger action to storm the parliament building-raising signs of democratic resistance and the flag of British Hong Kong. Eventually expelled by state police forces, the protestors withdrew from the parliament avoiding a potential bloody clash. …

The breakdown of democratic values is, today, lamented most vocally amongst those who trade in moralism and fight devoutly from the trenches of the culture wars. Yet, willingness to do the dirty work of dialogue-that most needed today-is found few and far between. What health can a civic culture maintain when conversation over fundamental disagreements becomes an impossibility? This is the question which confronts our anxious society, articulated amongst a few who dare to ask it.

Triumphant atop the end of history, we are increasingly aware that we inhabit a culture severed from the value systems on which it was…

Historians telling the story of the Trump era will undoubtedly remark on the death of John McCain as a moment of immense significance.

The corrosive effects of Trump, amongst them discord, division and the abandonment of truth are today all too apparent. Both symptom and cause of the decline in decency and civic discourse, they have bled into every layer of American society. From the West Wing; the President’s character and conduct degrades and delegitimises democratic institutions and processes at the national level. Whilst concurrently, in an unplanned national experiment, the entirety of the population have entered a state of near-constant toxic engagement with an array of differing digital media platforms. Through Facebook, Twitter and network news, the president tactfully distorts our perception…

The Home Office continues to refuse a boy suffering epileptic seizures life-saving medicine while conservative elites profit from Cannabis exports.

The conservative government and Home Office have refused repeated requests by the mother of a boy suffering from sporadic epileptic fits and autism to get life-saving cannabis oil-based medicine. Billy Caldwell was hospitalised last night in “life-threatening condition” whilst many in the Westminster elite continue to profit from cannabis sales. On Saturday, under overwhelming pressure, the Home Office buckled-issuing a special licence for the medicine.

As widely reported, on Monday this week Charlotte Caldwell was apprehended at customs, and had “life-saving” cannabis medication for her 12-year-old son Billy — who suffers from severe epilepsy — confiscated by border authorities. In…

The holy month of Ramadan has for decades in the West been seized upon as an opportunity to reject division and promote interfaith dialogue-a month of peace. Celebratory White House and Downing Street iftars are commonplace alongside messages underscoring Ramadan as a month of self-cultivation or inner jihad. Through fasting, night-prayers, qur’anic memorisation, and good deeds, believers seek closeness to God. It therefore strikes a nerve amongst Muslims and non-Muslims alike when even Islam’s holiest month is punctuated by violence. On the streets of Liège, Belgium last week an all too familiar scene; gunshots and cries of Allahu Akbar heard…

Secular Muslims like Sajid Javid in prominent government posts are victories for the battle of hearts and minds.

In tough times for Muslims in public life, a cohort of secular Britons hailing from Muslim communities are challenging assumptions and extremism on all sides. This week, as a result of the Home Office scandal on the treatment of ‘Windrush’ immigrants, Home Secretary Amber Rudd MP was forced to resign. Replacing her is Sajid Javid, former secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and Britain’s first Home Secretary of South Asian heritage.

Sajid Javid- Britain’s first Home Secretary of Muslim Heratige

It has been noted that Javid shares a remarkably similar profile to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Both of them are children of working-class bus drivers…

Offering breakthroughs across the board in Mental Health treatment, state-prohibited Psychedelics may yet be of paramount importance.

In 2017 mainstream outlets like the BBC, The Economist and VICE started taking notice of ‘Micro-dosing’, an emergent practice of consuming small quantities of psychedelics as a part of a regular lifestyle. Not to be conflated with fully fledged psychedelic trips, these were taken at ‘subperceptual levels’ with the intent of greater mental wellbeing, neuroplasticity and creativity. A far cry from imagined 1960s free-loving hippies, quietly emerging was a far more subdued image of psychedelic users as Silicon Valley engineers and successful professionals…

Public discourse since 2016 is increasingly characterised by heightened polarisation and an emotively divided political landscape. The right in the Western world struggles to grapple with rampant populism that degrades the political process with nativist sentiment whilst a concurrent fracturous identity discourse sees the left increasingly searching for traitors over converts. Where in the current fraught climate is a space for free dialogue held in good faith?

For several public intellectuals and pundits forged together in a new digital network of podcasts and talkshows, the ‘safe space’ for dialogue is to be found not in the universities or mainstream news…

Jihadist terrorism is bubbling up through the cracks of European society and the world, our strategies of addressing it have failed and it shows little sign of abating. There is vast chasm between those researching the history, trajectory and prevention of jihadist terrorism and the way in which the public and media is discussing it. In short: the reason we are not succeeding is because we are not discussing the problem.

Little over two years ago, shaken by the merciless slaughter of 12 cartoonists in January 2015, we poured into our streets and city squares to proclaim our rejection of…
