Design — What is Important.
Our world is filled with products, each with there own purpose. There in most homes, offices, schools and university’s. These products take over how we live, work, learn and teach, they help us do the most simplest things in our lives. So many people all over the world thrive off these products and sometimes lose them selfs following them and there designers. I am guilty of this myself.
Over the years I have noticed some very important aspects of what makes a product become one with its user. None are more important than a designers focus on a product. I am no expert in this field and have no qualifications in industrial or product design, but it does not take and expert to know if someone has taken the time and care over the development of a product.
I’m not just talking about smartphones here but everything from cars to a pencil and notebook. All of these have an individual or a team of designers who rather have the ability to create a masterpiece or don’t. Some designers are happy to put their name against a half arsed design or a lazy copy-cat product. Lets not single any of these out, incase they haven’t realised it yet.
There are a few great designers in this world, each with their own unique style almost like a signature or finger print, for example here are two great designers in this world who have the ability to create a masterpiece.
The industrial designer Jony Ive is responsible for some of the most famous designs in the world, most people will have something he designed in their home or office. The iPhone, iMac and MacBooks’s all of these bare Jony’s signature design of aluminium and glass. Jony is a British born industrial designer who has made a massive name for him self in the consumer product industry. This is a designer that is focused on making great products. He is a designer who can make you smile without saying anything, he speaks through his work but its not work for him, its a love and passion for enriching peoples lives with products.
Another incredible industrial designer is Marc Newson and Australian industrial designer who creates everything from transportation to consumer good such as furniture. He is a true great and is a perfect example of how something so simple can look and feel so great. My favourite design of his is a concept vehicle he created with Ford Motors called ‘Ford 021C’. This is not your typical designed Ford this is very quirky and it looks almost like an inflatable toy for a kids swimming pool. This does not make it a bad design, it just makes it stand out among all other cars. Not like a supercar does, with sharp aerodynamic bodywork, but with a soft simple flowing design.
Design means a lot to me, if I can’t see heart in a product I will never own it. I feel its very important to have great design in this world, it inspires innovation, pushes the human race forward. There is nothing better than seeing someones hard work being loved by so many people across the world.
I think there are a lot of designers that need to take note of the greats that are out there, such as Jony Ive and Marc Newson. Less is more because it allows you concentrate on the essentials and the products are not burdened with all the non-essential crap that you get from a lot of companies and designers. This is why people lose their Jobs if products fail. Lets get back to purity and back to simplicity.
