The notion of zero as nothing was common a long time ago, but “zero” as a fulfilling element of a group of twenty, or ten, hence as an operator of the vigesimal and decimal counting system is unique to the Mayas, to the Arabs who may have borrowed it from the Indians who may have borrowed it from the Chinese and it is integrated in western mathematics only with Descartes. The Greeks or many other precursors did not have a decimal or vigesimal system in which a sign or symbol means the completion of the basic group and the triggering of the next group. To call it zero is a mistake. It is the vigesimal triggering touchstone.
