smile, you bitch: being a woman in 2015
Nora McInerny Purmort

First, I want to say I read about another woman’s first hand account of how she had a naturally neutral looking expression but that it didn’t really express her feelings and everyone was telling her to cheer up when there wasn’t anything wrong her entire life. That being said, are you more upset by the reactions to you saying you don’t want to smile or the guy asking you to smile? I do think a lot of men are assholes, I’m a guy myself and want to make sure I’m not being an asshole, and my biggest concern is what are the cues to know when statements like that could be insulting. Taken out of context I would never have imagined that statement making someone experience negative feelings. What advice do you have for guys who don’t want to be seen as assholes?
