A man came to me one day. He wasn’t an ordinary man that you see often, he was unbelievably beautiful in every way you could imagine. And when I say imagine, really try to think of what beauty means to the world. If you can’t picture that, then think of what beauty means to you and put it in the form of the person you would love the most. I had been sitting in a coffee shop staring at my phone completely oblivious to the active world around me. The ambience that a regular coffee shop would have, I just drowned out the noise. He walked right up, sat across from me and smiled. I slowly looked away from my phone and stared at him in disbelief. First, because of the aura that he gave off just by entering my presence. He had a stronger energy than any other human could erupt into the world. Then, the fact that he decided to join me instead of all the other people that were there. I didn’t notice it at first, but he was carrying what looked like a brown shipping box. It was blank, no label, no stamp, just brown. It wasn’t huge but it was big enough for you to wonder what was inside. He parted his lips and began to speak words that sounded like I never heard before, though he spoke the same language.
“I have a gift for you.” he said keeping that same warm smile on his face. It was something about the smile that made everything calm and at peace while he was around. A threat by him never even crossed my mind.
After he spoke, I became even more confused. I didn’t know this man and he brought me a gift? So many questions I wanted to ask raced through my head, but out of respect for him I sat in silence.
“I know the pain you are feeling from your past my friend. It hurts sometimes, but there is a time when you must overcome. Never hesitate to reciprocate the greatest love received from the one that loves you most. Doubt and fear are only roadblocks to your success, don’t get stuck behind a wall. Let endless amounts of love and beauty saturate your life, output for input.”
He spoke these kind words and my heart began to fill. I became completely speechless as I started to think about the emotions I had been feeling as I floated through life. All these unnecessary paths I take and I don’t know what to do besides jam feelings down and survive. I wanted that feeling to fade away. I wanted purpose and amusement, not just feeling like I have to push through to make it. After him speaking to me, saying these things that were on my mind at the same moment he walked up, how could I not be surprised? He sat the box on the table, stood up, and began to walk away.
“Wait….” I yelled.
He turned around and we locked eyes, and in this moment they were windows to my soul. With one glimpse he was sensing my every emotion.
“Aren’t you gonna watch me open it?”
He smiled again and eased back in his chair. He reached over and handed me the box as his smile grew into a grin.
“It’s something in there that will change your life forever.” I started peeling the tape off the box and his smile became wider. As I got closer to revealing something that he had worked hard on, and did everything he could to make it, his eyes stayed locked on my face. The contents of this box were extraordinary. Something that I had never laid eyes on before. I knew no one else could ever have it, but it didn’t excite me as much as I thought it would. My smile became slight and confusion covered the man’s beautiful face. It’s not that I didn’t like the gift- I actually still thought it was pretty crazy that a stranger was able to come to me, speak these words, and give me this. How did he know me? Where did he come from — questions I opted out on asking, mostly because I was scared of the answers. What was it about this particular gift that made him so excited and anxious to give it to me? Obviously when he looked at it he saw something I didn’t or something worth way more than I would price it.
“Why’d you give me this?” I asked through fighting tears. I felt a lump beginning to form in my throat as he looked at me, reading me like a book.
“Do you not want it?” His face turned stern, as serious as I’ve seen him look the whole time he’d been here. I became hesitant, nervous to say something next. I cleared my throat and conjured up the words to speak.
“It’s not that I don’t want it, I just… don’t know why you gave it to… me…” I replied.
He laughed. As if it was his first time hearing a joke, only I didn’t say one. It was one of those moments where you don’t know if you should be laughing too so you just let the person get it all out before they say something else.
“My friend, of course you don’t know it’s significance now, it takes time to find a purpose for a thing. I give you this gift not to leave you unfulfilled, but for you to find the abundance within yourself.”
“Abundance? What are you…” he stopped me in mid-sentence.
“Take this gift. It is yours from me to you. All that I ask of you is to keep it. Play around with it and you figure out what it does. Learn why you hate, and grow to love it because you will. Find out all the quirks that make it unique. It is special, don’t take it for granted as you know it is as extraordinary as the person who holds it. Now, I guarantee that when you finally figure out the significance, you will understand why I love this gift as much as I do. You will gain the knowledge for yourself on why I think it is perfect for you. You and this gift will become unstoppable against all measure. As you use this gift, you will notice a multitude of gifts that will follow after. As long as you never give up on it, your success will be inevitable.”
Tears streamed down my face, still in disbelief. I didn’t know where this was coming from, but for some reason in my heart I believed him. His words gave me a small sensation of comfort making everything feel alright. All the hurt, anguish, pain, and feelings of being lost came to an end. I didn’t know where this freedom came from, but it built up pretty fast. Who was this man? I found myself sitting there with tears across my face as I watched him stand and walk away with his warming smile again. I quickly wiped my face, gathered my things and rushed home.
After that dream about the coffee shop I wondered if I’d really see that man. It was almost as if he disappeared from my whole life after meeting him just that once. Ever since then I’ve been feeling that same amount of freedom. I’ve had a sense of admiration in my heart since I woke up from that dream. It’s like he awakened something inside me that I never had before that day. The void that I felt inside my body had finally become whole. When I look in the mirror I even see myself as a new person, full of joy and excitement for life. Whatever it was he did or said to me changed my whole perception. Every time I go to that shop I sit in the same seat hoping he’ll show up. Instead of him coming, a new person sits at the table next to me. They find it in their hearts to spark a conversation and we usually talk for hours. Mostly me just listening and giving quick responses. I’ve heard almost everything about a person’s life that they feel is necessary to share. I’m always surprised at how deep these conversations can get. Then they all say the strangest thing at the end right before they leave.
“Thank you so much, it was really nice talking to you. Your spirit is so pleasant to be around. You must have a gift or something.”
