You nailed this whole thought. Nearly everything is a derivative of something else at this point, same goes for music and most other forms of art. For anyone to think they’re completely original is untrue. People get too caught up with wanting the fame and glory that they hold on to their “secrets” and sit back waiting to tear down anyone who comes too close to their style for comfort. The thing I love most about the design community is when people have enough vulnerability to share their process, knowledge and ultimately their passion, which feeds directly back to the community.
