A physical attack would definitely be violent. And, again, I do not advocate violence. Nor extended engagement with them. Interrupting someone’s dinner and speaking *one sentence* of rebuke to someone who is advocating hate is not violence. It is a needed intervention that communicates community disapproval and advocates on behalf of marginalized people who are threatened by this hateful rhetoric. And haters like this should not expect to circulate in polite society without feedback that they are hurting the community. Interrupting their dinner is a (small) price to pay when they’re seen in public. They don’t get a free pass.
