A former vice president of Casimir Capital, James “Jim” Ahern serves as a managing partner and head of capital markets for Laidlaw & Company. Before beginning his career and rising to an executive leadership role with Laidlaw, James “Jimmy” Ahern graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH) School. He continues to support the private boarding school as chair of its basketball alumni council for excellence.

Athletics is a vital part of NMH as the school encourages its students to challenge themselves in the classroom and in the sporting area. NMH participates in 19 varsity sports, including the three below.

1. Ice hockey: NMH has a varsity and junior varsity boys and girls ice hockey team, all of which compete in the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association. In the past decade, over 50 NMH alumni have played college hockey, including Brian Strait, who reached the National Hockey League as a member of the New York Islanders.

2. Lacrosse: The school’s varsity and junior varsity lacrosse teams participate in the Division I Northern New England League. Teams play against the country’s top prep schools, while graduating players have gone on to play for top colleges, including Harvard, the University of Michigan, and Brown.

3. Wrestling: NMH boys and girls compete within the Class A Wrestling League, one of four leagues that comprises the New England Preparatory School Association. The school has won the past four Class A tournaments and, in 2011, finished fifth at the Prep Nationals, which marked the highest finish for any New England school.
