The Power of a Selfie

A few months ago, I found myself huddled in a conference room with Legal & General business executives from across the United States and United Kingdom for a digital hackathon. Our challenge: come up with an idea that could transform the life insurance industry. We had two days.

As my team gathered to brainstorm ideas one challenge consistently came up. The process of obtaining life insurance is perceived by people as being mundane, time consuming and expensive. What if we could make it entertaining and simple?

The idea hit us like a photo booth falling out of the sky. Selfies! Selfies have become ubiquitous in our culture and while they have been used to help raise millions of dollars for charity, motivate Americans to vote, and even help detect cancer — there potential as a tool to inspire action has been largely untapped. We got to work on our pitch, and I even made my acting debut filming a sample advertisement.

Fast forward a few months, and I’m proud to be a part of the team that recently launched, an easy and engaging way to obtain a life insurance quote. Users can simply submit a photo of themselves, and in a matter of seconds the site’s technology will estimate their age, gender and body mass index (BMI) to provide an indicative term life insurance quote.

According to LIMRA, the insurance industry’s market research association, more than 37 million American families have no life insurance and are at financial risk if their primary wage earner dies unexpectedly. On top of that, LIMRA’s 2016 Insurance Barometer Study found that the majority of consumers overestimate the cost of life insurance by 200% to 300%. Our hope is that this new approach will engage and educate consumers about the affordability of life insurance and challenge inaccurate assumptions about expense., now in beta phase, is made possible through a partnership with Lapetus Solutions, Inc (LSI), the science and technology company that created the new facial analytics technology. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing what we learn from the beta phase and enhancing the customer experience based on feedback from users.
