How To Stop Ageing, Just Like The Wolverine
When I was in Los Angeles a few months ago I was staying in my favourite neighbourhood in the world, Manhattan Beach. Love it there. My daily addiction was SunLife Organics. One of the most sincere smooth / juice / health food spots you’ll find.
On SunLife’s menu is the Wolverine smoothie. I thought, “Wolverine is absolutely bad@ss but it has no relevance to a smoothie.” I was searching for a way to justify it, then I could be similarly adventurous with all my upcoming smoothie names.
Turns out, The Wolverine, perfectly suits a healthy smoothie. Just look at Hugh Jackman? The man has personified the Marvel character for 10 years and he just keeps looking younger, fitter, stronger. The bloke is cut.
So I wanted to plagiarise The Wolverine name, from Marvel, Hugh Jackman and now SunLife, and come up with the ultimate anti-ageing protein smoothie.
Any smoothie recipe should start with two cups of green leafs. This time it’s swiss chard, or as we call it in Australia, silverbeet.
Next up is reishi powder. This herbal medicine has been used for centuries, promoting longevity. But it’s not just ancient hype and mother’s tales. Reishi is scientifically shown to slow down ageing, fight cancer, detoxify the body and prevent cognitive and respiratory deterioration.
Next for The Wolverine is cinnamon. This sneaky spice is probably my favourite smoothie ingredient. Absolutely love it. It makes everything taste better and it’s surprisingly one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. More than berries, matcha green tea and one hundred other ingredients that get more street cred.
Our remaining ingredients bring the fibre, flavour and protein. Banana, almond butter, cocoa, dates and almond milk. Chocolately goodness.

The Wolverine Smoothie
- Takes 5 minutes
- Makes 1 serving
- Swiss chard — 2 cups
- Frozen banana — 1 1/2
- Almond butter — 2 tablespoons
- Reishi powder — 1 teaspoon
- Cocoa powder — 1 tablespoon
- Pitted dates — 3
- Cinnamon — 1 teaspoon
- Ice — 1/2 cup
- Almond milk — 1 cup
- Blend until creamy
