You’re gonna be okay! You are smart. You are strong. You are worthy.

I got an e-mail from an old friend today. We’ve shared some good times and some times that were not-so-good. We have a lot in common, but we are very different in some ways. We always believed in sharing our lives with others. We also believed that young people, especially children, are worth teaching and nurturing. My friend invented a teaching method that became an international model for early childhood education. By coincidence, I stumbled into the same methods in rural West Tennessee. I don’t know about my students, but the experience sure changed my life.

My friend and I have tried some pretty wild and wonderful projects. We have not always been successful — but we have always believed. And we have dared.
