DIFFERENT LOOKS
Shoes are important these days. So is hair — color, style. So are accessories.
Lucky me — I’ve been able to see some great performers this week. Artists sometimes dress the part; not always. Fans often seem to dress in ways that make statements. Today, I saw several people carrying little ET-type dolls as if they were babies. Soooo — are babies the new accessory?
Shoes are very important these days — sandals are ever-popular, of course. But how high can heels get before it’s just too much — too hard on the feet, the legs, the back, the neck? And how far are you planning to walk in them — ouch?!? Boots are very big, and need not be worn with trousers. So many styles of boots: everything from out-n-out cowboy boots in many colors and designs, but definitely western with stacked heels and pointy toes. I love engineer boots of beautiful leather, about mid-calf high, with a strap and buckle over the arch for no apparent reason. Sneakers are huge, too! Totally flat and black are trending; Converse Chuck Taylor high tops never left — the multi-color, multi-design kind look great and look fun.
Hair styles — oh my goodness! Long is definitely in — for everybody! Buns and braids and dreads — oh my! But the wild look is good, too! Totally free and not even brushed — just finger-fluffed. The other extremes are fun, too — fades with fluffy tops or total buzz-cuts, maybe 1/3 to 1/2 inch all over.
Short shorts are definitely back. And maybe for guys, too! I saw a pair of short shorts on a man, on a stage, today. His shoes were gym shoes with an ankle-wrap top, probably velcro. And he looked great. Amazing on guitar, too. Setting trends takes self-confidence, and maybe a little nerve too!
That’s probably the secret! People need to like the way they look. They feel more confident if they can be a little creative. It’s hard work, and may be pretty expensive. But when people feel better about how they look, they probably feel better about themselves — and that’s a good thing!
