Park Sightings

Kid and parent sharing steering.

I was riding my bike at the park today. In the big, empty parking lot over by the soccer fields I saw them — a little girl was sitting on the woman’s lap and steering the car. Probably, they were both steering the car. It was cute, of course. The little girl was very excited, and they were laughing. But I really wouldn’t want to meet them on one of the streets in, or near, the park.

I had to think of the great image-invoking lyrics:

“I’d sit on his lap in the big old Buick and steer as we drove through town.”

“I’m thirty-five — we got a boy of our own now. Last night I sat him up behind the wheel and said ‘son, take a good look around. This is your hometown.’ ”
