SIMPLE LIFE

Life is getting to be so complicated. I am craving simplicity.

Talk-n-text, PM, DM, email, messenger, blind copy, forward — I can’t even keep up with the language, let alone what the language represents! I am trying to build a simpler life, with its own rewards.

There was a women’s meeting today. But it was scheduled at the same time as one of my regular yoga classes. Yoga won. I hope that there’ll be opportunities for both yoga and women’s meetings in the days and years to come. Compared to yoga, the women’s movement is of relatively more recent vintage. And I really need mindfulness and focus these days. Focus is not always easy, but it is important — probably even necessary.

I put together a nice little present for my sister’s birthday. I got a really beautiful “happy birthday to my sister, my friend” card. It is coated with golden glitter, and tied with a velvet burgundy bow. It is actually prettier than the little present, but she’ll enjoy both. I mailed the package to my sister at the United States Postal Service office near me. I’ll also call her to visit for a minute on the actual day, and to wish her “happy birthday.” These gestures are old-fashioned; they are not modern and up-to-date. But that’s okay — they’re me.

If I have a plan for tomorrow, next week, next month, next year — it is probably to take life one day at a time. No big projects, no big plans. Getting out in the sunshine every day is a good goal. I would love a month to eat when I’m hungry, sleep when I’m tired, and get up when I wake up. That is all the vacation I would ever need.

“I have a simple philosophy: Fill what’s empty. Empty what’s full. Scratch where it itches.” Alice Roosevelt Longworth
