On a related note, I need to buy a quality dresser because the tightening screws keep popping out…

I’ve always found Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, etc to be way overpriced and lacking in quality. My recommendations would be:

  1. Local consignment places. We have a local chain here and if you’re willing to stop in regularly, you can find expensive, well-made stuff for quite a bargain.
  2. A local furniture store. Most cities have local places that have been in business forever. You won’t necessarily find the deal of the century, but you will have solid, but not overpriced with lots of choices in fabrics.
  3. Local furniture makers. I am lucky enough to live close to Amish communities that specialize in really nice pieces. This is definitely NOT a cheap option, but I love the stuff.
  4. Estate sales, garage sales, etc. Anywhere that older people are downsizing or passing away and their kids don’t want it.
