2023 Aschaffenburg in Germany: a Photoessay

My American friends had never heard of a city called Aschaffenburg and had no idea it was one of the best-kept secrets in Germany. Even in the high tourist season during summer, there are not that many visitors.

Aschaffenburg is the happiest German city. About 80% of the population are satisfied with living conditions and do not intend to move.

Walking in the city, it is easy to see why.

Porches are ubiqidous in Aschaffenburg.

When it comes to GDP per inhabitant, Aschafenburg is the 60th in Germany. For comparison, Frankfurt is the second-wealthiest city in Europe after London.

But when you visit the city, Mark Twain’s famous expression comes to mind:

“There are 3 kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

The problem with Frankfurt is that the wealth there is distributed extremely unevenly.

As much as I love the city with its skyscrapers and luxury stores, I never have the feeling that the people in Frankfurt are as wealthy as in Aschafenburg.

Goethe Strasse is the only exception.
