When I tell my fellow Germans that I sometimes make photoshoots in Schweinfurt, they are incredulously shaking their heads and raising their brows. What does a professional photographer do in this small city and how in the world does she find clients there? From all the choices you have, why not Los Angelos, New York City, or at the very least Rome? And yet, Schweinfutr city of 53 415 inhabitants to the surprise of many, has a lot to offer.

For a long time it was just a grey industrial city.

The turning point in the modern history of the city was the year 2014, when Ledward Barracks which stationed some 12 000 American soldiers was turned into the FHWS college campus.

The Barracks building is so ugly, you just can not take your eyes away from it. Only the architect who designed it in the 1930s could love the design.

But turning the building into college campus was the best thing Schweinfurt could do in terms of attracting the smartest and the most beautiful students.

There I took my German language and within a short time reached level B2.😀

In addition, the German teachers who teach in the FHWS today are really cool.

The city has one inland port, three Autobahn highways, and three train stations. And many, many churches.

Perhaps most importantly, Schweinfurt is very well connected to Frankfurt, Würzburg, Nürnberg and Bamberg. So if you live in Schweinfurt and if you get bored out of your mind during the work week, on Saturday you can just hop in a car or catch a train. Within less than 2 hours you can be walking the streets and breathing the air of the cities mentioned above.

You want to try fantastic German wine? Within 30 minutes of a car ride from Schweinfurt, there is Wineries of Volkach.

You want to touch an animal? Welcome to the Wildpark Schweinfurt animal park.

Want to enjoy art? Georg Schäfer Museum is my favorite city Museum. Sure, the exhibits get updated there usually only every two years or so, but if live in Schweinfurt you get used to a slow pace of life and two years is nothing to you.😉

I have to be honest, my all-time favorite activity when I am in Schweinfurt is walking around the city center and eating ice cream.

The city has so many ice cream shops, hair salons and medical offices that sometimes I think that an average Schweinfurter gets born, has ice cream, gets a haircut, gets his prescription glasses and hearing aid and he retires there.

But I am sure this is just me, a foreigner, talking.
