I have been dismayed from the get-go by blanket portrayal of Trump supporters as cartoonish fools motiviated soley by racism, xenophobia, etc. They are all human beings, deserving of compassion, and many feel alienated, disenfranchised, and screwed over. Unless the issues that caused them to turn to Trump in the first place are addressed, the anger will continue, whether he wins or not. I have tried to engage with individual Trump supporters on Twitter (I know, I am just asking for trouble), and it never goes well. The ones I have interacted with take Youtube videos as fact, and share sensationalistic memes to support their positions. I’ve been sworn at, insulted, and mocked, but I firmly believe respectful engagement has to be part of the solution. I have had better luck talking to individuals in person. One man cited his own financial survivial as his chief reason for supporting Trump. One of the saddest aspects to me is that the economic concerns that drove so many to Trump will only be exacerbated if he is elected.
