Snake Pond, the birthplace of Hikawa Shrine, one of the most famous shrines in Japan
Snake Pond, the birthplace of one of Japan’s most famous shrines, Hikawa Shrine, was a sacred place that until a few years ago was inaccessible.
The atmosphere is quite different from that from the approach to the main shrine, and the path surrounded by greenery is very quiet and mysterious.
Since ancient times, snakes have been regarded as incarnations of water deities, and the deity Susano-no-mikoto is said to be the god of water control, based on a legend that he killed the giant snake (the eight-forked serpent). This pond is said to be the Snake Pond because of the deity’s divine power and virtue.
This is the reason why this pond is called the Snake Pond.
