Daily Writing on Medium

Thinking of an idea, structuring a post, and hitting publish every single day on Medium is a tough cookie. 🍪

Every morning—wherever I am, I have to rack my brain and think something up. Most days my mind is a blank void of nothingness. Zilch, nada.

Sometimes panic sets in. That’s when I delay writing anything until late in the evening. It’s the worst. It’s not sensible.

I haven’t had such a good habit streak. Many of my posts are crap, I know they are. Some of them are rubbish 1 minute reads.

Friends and strangers still support, respond and recommend my stories and it means a lot.

But despite all of this brain-ache, I wouldn’t go back. Damn, I still have 304 days of this left.

My Writing Is Seen by Thousands

Wow, so just in the last 30 days I’ve had over 1,000 impressions (see image above). The number of views I had the 30 days before that? 375.

Man, that’s a huge difference.

Medium is a fantastic platform for gaining views. The read ratio is also pretty good. They send out your article in email digests, on their apps, and I tend to get referrals on News360.

Their algorithm surfaces reads you actually wanna… well, read.

I’m Starting to Sound More Like Myself

Daily blogging = writing practice. I have limited time each day to write and publish a post.

Y’know what that means? Less editing, and more writing what you think. My words come right from my brain, and I don’t tend to self-edit.

I care much less about what people think of my opinion and so I don’t tend to hold back as much.

Obviously, there’s still stuff I don’t want to write. I don’t wanna get involved in politics or world issues. It’s not my place.

There’s a Pattern in Popular Articles

The amount of views seems to spike on Monday & Tuesday. Perhaps more people check their email or go on Medium.

Either way, there’s definitely a pattern there. If I was to publish weekly, I’d publish on Sundays.

The topic is also important. The articles I’ve found do best in terms of views and recommends are self-improvement ones.

Live for Your Present Self, Not the One in Your Head is by far my most popular article. It was even picked up by The Ascent publication.

Stats for most popular story.

The second was Will a Driving License Exist in 15 Years Time?. I’m pretty sure it’s because self-driving cars are a pretty popular topic right now.

Writing about trending topics does seem to help, and you might even get in the sidebar.

Just Start Writing

If you’re thinking about doing you’re very own 365 writing project, go for it.

It’s OK if your articles are a little crappy.

It’s OK if you’re not getting many views.

It’s OK if you have a bunch of 1 minute reads.

It’s OK if you have very similar articles.

Because the experience you gain, the habit-formation you grow, and the people that support you will make it all worth it.

Write from your head, and don’t think about the stats. The numbers just a by-product.

I’m writing about something that interests me every day for a year. This is day 61 of 365. ✌️
