Earlier this week my friend sent me a screenshot of a conversation between him and his Spanish tutor, who was cancelling their lesson for the week. He could not conduct the lesson, he explained, because he was in the hospital with his pregnant girlfriend, who was about to give birth to their first child. While I understood from context clues the meaning of “Ella está a punto de dar a luz”, or “she is about to give birth”, I never heard the phrase. At first read, I translated exactly: she has arrived, physically, (“esta”) “at the point to give light.”
