Tech at school

This is how I, a 14 year old Dutch student, think of using tech at school.

An introduction:

First of all I want you to know that I don`t say that all things in a classroom should be replaced by tablets or computers. I just think you can improve things at school.

I am Jasper, a VWO+ student. This means: preparatory scientific education. Since I`m at school I hope you`ll forgive any flaws in my English. The + in VWO+ is for the extra courses, which are philosophy, culture, IT and modern languages like English, German and French. I`m also planning to do Cambridge English.

This post:

This is my first post on Medium so I don`t really know how to do this and I hope you will give some tips for a possible next time.

Current situation:

At my school we use its learning and Magister. They want it all to be on Magister which should be easy, but it isn`t. The app is slow, and you can`t use it in class. It is possible to monitor the presence of students, to give marks and to write down the homework for the next lesson. Nothing to make better teaching in class possible. We also have computers. They are not in each classroom and they are really slow.

Smartphones:

Almost every child at my school has a smartphone (0,00000001 doesn`t have one). So this is the first I thought of. With the free apps of Microsoft or Google you could easily do your homework or make notes. This note making could be done with Evernote or with Cogi. And some books we use at school are already digitized. Which reduces the amount of children with this hugeeee backpacks. I also think this is much cheaper than buy new books. Of course you can`t/shouldn`t use your phone in classes like math and drawing. The use of things like teachers.io and myHomework can make learning for a test or planning school stuff a lot easier.

Apps/sites for smartphones

Tablets:

Tablets are more expensive than phones but also more useful. And when you buy a lot of tablets in one time you can get a huge discount. Of course you can use the apps that I`ve written down above also on a tablet, but some apps offer a lot more functionality on a tablet. If you use a stylus you can write and draw things and on the most tablets you can read eBooks pretty good.

Chromebooks:

I think that the use of Chromebooks is a good idea. Especially when you combine it with a smartphone. Chromebooks are cheap, fast and they have good battery life. You can also read eBooks on them. Google even sells Chromebooks for education! Managing this Chromebooks for education is also easy with the management console. There is an app pack available with a great variety of useful things.

Ideas:

In this time buying a tablet, laptop, phone or Chromebook isn`t always an option for schools and parents due to the crisis. So if the school still wants to digitize the can do fifty/fifty with parents in time parents will have the option to pay the other half and buy the Chromebook. With the money the school saves this way they can do other great things!

  • More can follow

Conclusion:

Using tech at school doesn`t have to be expensive but it can make teaching better and easier.Using tech for everything still isn`t a good idea because children still need to express their creativity. I think Chromebooks are the best option because of the “low” price and the versatility of the device.
