My high school was the first in NY to offer C++ programming with the pre-requisite of pre-calculus being the minimum while calculus was preferred and when I started the class there was a healthy group of women in there none of who had parents that were involved in anything STEM in any way. Nothing kept them out and nothing threw them out.

Same case when I went to university for Forensic Science with Forensic computing being my secondary specialty (due to my previous programming experience combined with being self taught other things computer related). I saw plenty of women there and no one keeping them down. The funny thing is these women went on to work at tech firms straight out of college while a few of the guys I know with similar grades were essentially told they needed more experience or qualification for the same job.
