Because it’s an Amendment to a Bill that nobody has seen yet.
For example, let’s pretend the Amendment isn’t single-payer, let’s say it’s “Everyone gets a free pony” Let’s say the amendment is approved, but the text of the Bill, when we finally see it, is “Kill all the horses”. These aren’t mutually exclusive ideas — so everyone ends up with a free dead horse.
If we’d already seen the bill, and the single-payer amendment isn’t hampered by the bill, then sure, it should be supported regardless of who came up with it.
But this, however, is just a trick to try to split progressives and force those up for reelection into a bad position.
