CS373 Spring 2022: Jay Park — Week 14

What did you do this past week?
This past week I met with the rest of my group and we doled out the tasks for this phase. Another member of my group and I were assigned with working on the presentation part of the phase. So we met on Friday to work on the presentation slides and also come up with a general outline for our presentation on Monday.
What’s in your way?
There’s nothing particular in the way of this part of the project at the moment. The most I could say is in the way is the fact that a few members of the group myself included aren’t super comfortable presenting live. I also have a lot of other due dates right around the day of our presentation so I’m more stressed about this presentation than I should be.
What will you do next week?
Next week after finishing our presentation I will mainly be working on my other classes as by that point my group would hopefully have turned in the project by that point. This would free up time for me to then work on my other classes I have an exam that Wednesday and Thursday as well.
What did you think of Paper #14: The New Methodology
I thought that the paper this week was really interesting. It goes in-depth as to the current state of software development and the considerations that were made when developing these Agile methods. It highlights the differences between these methods and traditional engineering methods and the benefits that it brings to software development.
What was your experience with refactoring?
Like last week, I found these lectures really informative and can really see how proper refactoring can save you so much work in the future. I remember having a part in an interview earlier this year where they asked me to look at a chunk of code and point out any major problems. At the time they pointed out something I’d missed about how although a part of the code was technically functional, there was a segment of it that had to be edited anytime a change was made rather than adding code, which I realized meant they were probably looking for an answer related to refactoring.
What made you happy this week?
I was happy this week to get our regrade back for phase 2 resubmissions and that we fixed all the issues that we had for the original submission. I’m also happy that we are almost done with the semester and that soon enough we’ll be on summer vacation where everyone will be able to take a well-deserved break.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week
My pick of the week is to take a good break after the end of the semester to hang out with friends and family and overall just get a break from academics. There’s the new Doctor Strange movie that is coming out soon, and I know that as soon as I have the time I am going to watch it with some friends.
