My first visit to the beautifully green and Celtic region of Galicia comes in the form La Coruña. A bustling port town situated on a peninsula facing the Atlantic ocean. After an exhausting six hour drive from Madrid made eaiser by a stop in the beautiful medieval town of Medina del Campo, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this bustling city’s taverns offering incredible quality sea food at reasonable prices! I’m definitely not in Madrid anymore ;)

Having taken time to seek out a great seafood restaurant on the first night, A Taberna de Cunquiero, on the lively Calle Estrella, I would highly recommend the zamburiñas (scallops) to anyone looking beyond the typical ‘pulpo gallego’. Another highly recommendable dish is that of ‘berberechos’ (cockles), seasoned with a hint of lemon, depending on your taste buds, makes for a sumptuous dinner!

If you’re staying for more than just a day I would suggest a walk to Playa de Orzán which has beautiful sandy beaches nestled in to rock formations on the sea front. If walking is not your thing, you can rent a bike, mountain or city, whatever takes your fancy and take a ride up to the Hercule’s Tower. It’s a lovely ride around the peninsula which can mean sore bums after 3 hours so be sure to stop for a coffee somewhere!

No visit to La Coruña is complete without a stop in Plaza de María Pita, where the Galician heroine’s statue proudly stands in the middle of square defending La Coruña against the English Armada’s attack of 1589. Hats off to this brave lady facing such a fearsome force! :P

And finally, for those of you that know me, rest and relaxation means a well deserved drink on a beautiful terrace. I lucked out in having one on the roof of my hotel! With the lovely barman Sergio ensuring that drinks were a-flowing. Thus ended my wonderful few days in La Coruña. Cheers!
