An internet activist’s guide to #FreeAJStaff
Things you should not mention:
- Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed by name — a simple “and two of his colleagues” after Peter Greste’s name will suffice
- The fact that one of “Peter Greste’s colleagues” was sentenced to an additional 3 years jail for being in possession of a spent bullet casing
- The Australian Prime Minister’s glowing endorsement of President Sisi’s brutal crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood
- Anything to do with the decades long, multi-billion dollar Western support of the same corrupt apparatus that handed down these verdicts
- Anything that reminds fellow activists that the actions of their governments are in large part to blame for the absence of a just, efficient and effective political and judicial system in Egypt
- The shock you personally feel at the verdict (extra points for expressing anger)
- How ‘disgusted’ you are
- Helpfully point out the absence of a just, efficient and effective political and judicial system in Egypt — bonus points for using the term “Kangaroo Court”
- Your intended boycott of Egypt and its goods
- Your desire for intervention — by your government, by another Western government, by Egypt’s government — who cares as long as the verdict is overturned and ‘our boy’ can come home (…oh, and “his colleagues” too)
