An internet activist’s guide to #FreeAJStaff

Things you should not mention:

  1. Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed by name — a simple “and two of his colleagues” after Peter Greste’s name will suffice
  2. The fact that one of “Peter Greste’s colleagues” was sentenced to an additional 3 years jail for being in possession of a spent bullet casing
  3. The Australian Prime Minister’s glowing endorsement of President Sisi’s brutal crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood
  4. Anything to do with the decades long, multi-billion dollar Western support of the same corrupt apparatus that handed down these verdicts
  5. Anything that reminds fellow activists that the actions of their governments are in large part to blame for the absence of a just, efficient and effective political and judicial system in Egypt

Things you should mention:

  1. The shock you personally feel at the verdict (extra points for expressing anger)
  2. How ‘disgusted’ you are
  3. Helpfully point out the absence of a just, efficient and effective political and judicial system in Egypt — bonus points for using the term “Kangaroo Court”
  4. Your intended boycott of Egypt and its goods
  5. Your desire for intervention — by your government, by another Western government, by Egypt’s government — who cares as long as the verdict is overturned and ‘our boy’ can come home (…oh, and “his colleagues” too)

Stay strong comrades.
