Great article and on a subject that I don’t often see addressed.
I’m a fiction writer, but on my blog I often write about social history (because my books are set in the 1920s). I suppose writing a blog is different from writing a book, but for me I’d say the main goal isn’t to reveal a Golden Goose, my main question is: what may history give of relevance to my readers today?
I’m lucky, because I think the 1920s are hugely relevant to us today. Surprisingly, people in the 1920s were experiencing so may of our fears and anxieties, so my job is often not very hard.
What I thoroughly agree with you is that we need to make our writing interesting and not just by giving interesting info. I’ve read many blog abotu interesting subject, pack full of info, that were so hard to read because of the way they were written. I do think using some finction tricks may help. I normally try to use a narrative structure, especially if I can rely on an evolving situation. It seems to work with my readers.
Thanks again to share your view. I really enjoyed it.
