More than ‘get personal’ I’d say ‘be honest’. That means about yourself, but also abotu your ideas and your positions. Because you’re right, readers can always say whether the author is being honest or is taking up a fake personality.

If we are honest, we can always talk about what we feel and think and we’ll be able to sustain our position without becoming nasty or unpleasant, because we truly believe what we are talking about.

It is risky, I’ll admit it. But I don’t really see any other way to be a writer.
