Jean Danhong Chen’s Top 3 Must-Visit Destinations in America

Jean Danhong Chen — Yellowstone National Park located in Montana

There are so many places to explore in the United States that it can be difficult to narrow it down. Do you want to be surrounded by the picturesque mountains of Wyoming or the sandy beaches of Miami? To make this decision a little bit easier, we’ve asked immigration lawyer and seasoned traveler Jean Danhong Chen for her take on the must-visit travel destinations in the U.S. Continue reading for three of her favorite places to travel and why she considers them to be among the best destinations in America.

1. Montana

One visit to Montana is all it takes to make you understand why it’s called “Big Sky Country.” Nature abounds in this western state, from mesmerizing wildlife to magical stretches of blue sky. It’s also home to two famous national parks, Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, the latter being a favorite of Jean Danhong Chen. Yellowstone boasts 3,500 square miles of pure wilderness, complete with snow-capped mountains, alpine rivers, dramatic canyons, lush forests, and even geothermal activity in the form of hot springs and geysers. There is truly nothing else like it in the United States. As you may have guessed by now, Montana is a great spot for outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, camping, fishing, and white-water rafting. While partaking in any of these exciting pastimes, be sure to keep an eye out for elk, grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, deer, and bison. Billings is the largest city in Montana and is in the southern part of the state, making it a great jumping off point for exploring Yellowstone. Another side of Montana is the cowboy culture. If you’ve ever wanted to unleash your inner cowboy or cowgirl, this is the place! The state is known for both its ranches and rodeos. Jean Chen recommends signing up for a horseback riding tour through the Rocky Mountains or watch the professionals herd cattle at one of the many local dude ranches.

2. Gettysburg

Immigration lawyer Jean Danhong Chen is a major history buff, which is why she considers Gettysburg to be one of the must-visit travel destinations in the United States. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is known for its importance in the American Civil War of the nineteenth century. More specifically, this small Pennsylvania town was the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the subsequent Gettysburg Address, given by president Abraham Lincoln. Although many people likely learned about Gettysburg in their high school textbooks, there is nothing quite like seeing it in person. The battlefield is extremely well preserved, being a part of Gettysburg National Military Park. The grounds include the Gettysburg National Cemetery and an interactive museum about the history of the battle. Beyond the battle site, the town of Gettysburg is bursting with colonial charm. Local gift shops, restaurants, and cafes can be found throughout. Further, only a short drive outside of Gettysburg, you’ll find a bounty of wineries and fruit farms. Adams County is in the heart of the Pennsylvania Fruit Belt, making it the ideal spot for an afternoon of wine tasting or apple picking. A short distance to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C., Gettysburg is the perfect day trip to make when visiting any of these locations.

3. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico provides a slice of the Caribbean in the United States. It is one of Jean Danhong Chen’s favorite travel destinations in the world due to its warm climate, tropical beaches, and vibrant culture. With 270 miles of coastline, it’s no surprise that Puerto Rico is home to stunning beaches. Flamenco Beach is consistently hailed as one of the top beaches in the world. Puerto Rico also boasts a rich history. The island has two fortresses constructed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that date back to when Spain had control of the Caribbean. Furthermore, Jean Chen claims that no trip to Puerto Rico is complete without visiting Old San Juan. This cultural attraction features colonial buildings, blue cobblestone streets, museums, art galleries, shops, and more. It is the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture. The best part of Puerto Rico is that it is a U.S. territory means hassle-free travelling, not having to worry about passports or currency exchange. By air, San Juan can be reached in less than four hours from New York or in two and a half hours from Miami.

Jean Danhong Chen hopes that some of her favorite places in America end up on your travel itineraries in the future.
