Life can get pretty mundane for anyone. Following the same routine day after day can become stale and boring for even the most adventurous person. Routines aren't always bad, but when the excitement of life starts to wane, it’s time to reevaluate that routine and see how it can be improved for better enjoyment.
A repetitive routine is the extreme case. We may just want to so something cool, but our inhibitions and doubt restrict us from making that move. That’s where spontaneous production comes into play. Life is about living in the moments presented to us, and sometimes we have to live on a whim to live more fun. Sometimes you have to say “f*ck it” and pull the trigger.
I recently made a one day trip from NYC to Toronto for the epic extravaganza known as Hennypalooza. I've been a part of the event since it’s inception, but I wasn't sure I was going to make it this time. I had a long work week, didn't feel like flying, and didn't want to be bothered. Then I remembered a few things:
- I had about a zillion frequent flyer miles to burn
- I hadn't been to T Dot in 4 years
- The flight from NYC to Toronto is an hour flat!
- I would be gone for 24 hours
The last point was what really invigorated me. A day trip to Toronto. I can’t remember the last time I did a day trip anywhere! A quick flight in and out with serious fun in between? Sign me up! I got hyped when I booked my ticket (two days before the event mind you), and couldn't wait to get there.
As long as I was living la vida YOLO, I decided to ramp the spontaneity up a notch. I drove to the airport and parked my car there for the day, as opposed to taking cabs, which slashed my travel costs in half! I decided tot take public transportation to downtown Toronto when I landed. Bus and train instead of a cab? A little nervous but good nervousness nonetheless. I executed all of this effortlessly, saved money, and had a blast. Had I stayed in NYC, it would've been a regular Saturday. I got to support good friends, have a blast, and tire myself out for 24 hours! Success!
That one decision made me realize that it’s cool to step out of your comfort zone every once in a while and do something different. It doesn't just have to be a random last minute trip. You can change your workout routine, walk/drive a different way to work, try new foods, or even listen to different genres of music. Variety is the spice of life, and sometimes the normal dishes we eat can lose it’s flavor when they gets familiar.
