Fireside Chat with Premier Burt and Jeff Pulver (taken March 19, 2019)

I am grateful for the opportunity to host such a special and meaningful event in Bermuda last week. I am grateful to everyone who joined us, who shared their presence, their voice and their time. Together we represented a community of 120+ people from 14 countries and our meeting was a major milestone in establishing Bermuda as a global hub within the securities token industry. I thank all of the speakers, both those recognized in the schedule and those who came forward and spoke during the event.

It was amazing to see how proactive the Government of Bermuda is in connecting with companies involved in the security token ecosystem, especially companies looking to issue a security token. As a tech innovator I am used to dealing with reactive regulators involved in public policy. Bermuda is setting a new standard for the world to see when embracing an enabling fintech innovation. The Bermuda Government is focused on taking the proactive steps needed to help accelerate the global adoption of a technology platform. …

Back in November, the Blockchain Token Association (BTA) hosted 100+ guests at our first Security Token Protocol Summit in NYC. In December I had the opportunity to meet with the Premier of Bermuda and our conversation covered several topic areas which included the evolution of Security Tokens. As a result, I am excited to announce the next BTA Security Token Summit will be co-hosted by the Government of Bermuda on March 18–19, 2019 in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Within the Security Token issuance/exchange space, we have an immediate need for “operability before interoperability” and “coopetition before competition.” This is an open invitation for those interested in the evolution of the Security Token Industry to come together and explore the future. …

Jeff Pulver speaking at 2018 Rhode Island Blockchain Summit

Rhode Island’s Vision will bring Blockchain Jobs into the State

Last week Steven Nerayoff and I co-hosted the 2018 Rhode Island Blockchain Summit. Those who joined us had an opportunity to connect with the Governor of Rhode Island and her team of officials to exchange ideas on what is needed to bring Blockchain related jobs to Rhode Island.

As a pioneer of VoIP, having seen the challenges faced by disruptive technologies, even those bringing positive change, my expectations for state, federal and international acceptance for the Blockchain Industry were moderate at best. So it is beyond unusual for me to be able to report the warm embrace extended by the state of Rhode Island to representatives of the blockchain industry, and their expressed willingness to work with us to make their state the epicenter of blockchain technology innovation in America. …

I am grateful for the support the Security Token Association (STA) received since our launch earlier this year. To date we are an international organization with members from: Australia, Canada, China, Israel, New Zealand, UK and the US.

To date we have hired a lobbyist in Washington DC and a DC law firm for our organization and for guidance in operating our association.

Shortly after launching, I experienced pushback from some of my friends involved in the Blockchain industry who wanted to support our industry organizing efforts but did not feel comfortable being associated specifically in the Security Token space.

Upon reflection, right before Consensus 2018, I came to the following conclusion: In order for our organization to be effective; we need to be “token neutral.” I realized our association should be open to tokens of all types. If a token starts off associating as a security token but then associates as a utility token, so be it. And if a token starts off as a utility token and associates as a security, great. …

On April 16, 2018 the first Security Token Association (STA) Member meeting was held in Palo Alto, California. Current STA Members as well as prospective members joined us from around the world.

At the meeting I shared some of the goals for the first 18 months of the STA. I am keen on formally getting all of the interested membership on board and to start our local monthly meetups over the next 4 to 6 weeks. …
