There are some extraordinary things about Longview. One of the best things, and maybe the most famous business, is the Longview Jerky Shop at the southern end of the village.

It has, without a doubt, the best beef jerky in the world — bar none. Most of the jerky that I have tried that is commercially made is plastic. Some of those products are pink in color and taste disgusting. Jerky from the Longview jerky shop is a dark brown and tastes like jerky should — homemade, slightly salty, spicy, delicious.

Last week I dropped by and had a short discussion with the owners. Now, here is the interesting part. The operation is operated by 3 generations of Kirks. Len Kirk founded the company in 1978 and opened in June 1979. Len passed on ownership to his son, Tom. As of a few years ago, Tom’s son, Alex, has joined the crew as General Manager.

One of their top sellers is Szechuan — Longview Style Beef Jerky.

This is the Product Description:
“A nice snappy bite, not too hot, but just right. 100 percent Alberta Beef roast marinated in Asian sauce and cooked to absolute perfection in our smokehouse. This newer flavour has a good bite for all you spice lovers. One taste of the Szechuan Longview style beef jerky and your taste buds will be soaring on the Orient Express.”

The downside is that my wife and I are — sadly — addicted. But maybe that is okay — we are helping the local economy.
