I posted a note on the Facebook page related to Longview, Alberta, called Rants and Raves. The post read, “Wanted: Someone who has a tough time reading. I’m learning to teach people to read and I need a student who struggles with reading but wants to learn. Call me on my cell.”

I waited a couple of days. I wasn’t anticipating a response. I figured everyone on Longview could read so I wasn’t expecting much, but then the phone rang. I answered and Marjie said she may know someone who might be interested in working with me.

Vera

Before I get into the details, let’s pause and take a step back and gain some perspective. I know a lady — a teacher — called Vera Goodman. She has developed a unique way to coach people who find reading difficult. She lives in Calgary — also in Alberta. She loves life. She loves reading. She loves being a reading coach, but she is getting up in years. She still has a powerful passion for what she does but she doesn’t have the energy that she used to.

I have known Vera for a while. I met her at a networking function a few years ago. Her eyes sparkle. She has a beautiful smile. Her voice is powerful but gentle and kind. At that time, I took a peek at her website. It was interesting but not…
