From my review of the actual study, it doesn’t seem as if the authors did a deeper dive into these preferences. Rather, the researchers just gleamed data from public profiles, then, as you suggested, aligned existing social anthropological studies to fit whatever narrative they presumed were related to the selection.

It is a lot of conjecture, it seems.
