Autumn is the best season (and it really isn’t close)
By: Jared Hines
I was talking to my friend Dan the other day as we made our way to Vikings Training Camp in Mankato, Minnesota. For those who don’t live in Minnesota, you might not know that it actually gets really hot here. Let me rephrase that, it gets really humid here. Las Vegas gets to 102 in the summer and it doesn’t feel that terrible because it’s a “dry heat” but if it gets to 102 in Minnesota, the humidity is so unbearable that people just decide to not go anywhere.

I leaned over to Dan and told him that I had a hot take. He probably thought I was going to say something about the Vikings going undefeated (they won’t) or how many yards Stefon Diggs will have (823). What came out of my mouth was something that he not only didn’t think was crazy, he actually agreed.
Summer kinda sucks.
That’s right, summer sucks. Okay, I don’t hate it as much as I hate the Packers or hate it as much as I hate condensation on the side of my iced coffee (the absolute worst), but there are many things about Summer I don’t enjoy.
Here are a few:
- Too hot (ideal temperature is 72 and Sunny and MN is always like 96 and humid)
- Expensive
- Boring
- Expensive (Did I say that already? There are only so many rooftops and patios I can sit at before I go broke).
- No football
- It isn’t Autumn
Okay, so I didn’t sit down in front of my computer to just complain about summer. In fact, summer is probably my second favorite season after Autumn but the gap between the two isn’t close. Like the U.S. Woman’s Gymnastics team over the field not close. Spring is meh and let’s not get started about winter right now. The simple fact is that Autumn is perfect.
Friday Night Lights on Friday, followed by college games on Saturday and NFL games on Sunday. Go outside and the breeze is lightly taking the changing leaves off your trees. Go to your local Starbucks and get the newest pumpkin spiced drink (don’t judge). The list goes on and on.
- The weather
- The weekends
- The views outside
- The wardrobe choices (anyone else a huge fan of shorts and a sweatshirt? I thought so).

People also seem happier in the fall to me. After Halloween ends and America heads towards Thanksgiving (and Christmas), the happiness levels of everyone just seems to increase. Smiling at strangers, wishing them a good day, and if you are lucky, people even hold the door open for you. What could be better?
Yes, football influences this opinion greatly but it goes way behind that. There are so many things about Autumn that makes it great. I took to Twitter and polled my followers to see if they agreed with me and surprisingly, they did. 49% of those polled thought Autumn was the best season, followed by summer, spring and winter. I guess my hot take wasn’t as hot as I thought.
So as August winds down and September arrives, let’s bid a quick farewell to summer.
We won’t want you back until December 26th.
