The term gets a bad rap. It sounds dirty. It’s because the most-frequent connotation implies that the message is disingenuous.

I once read that marketing is articulating the promise and sales is fulfilling that promise (wish I remembered the source). I think the term marketing gets a bad rap simply due to over-promising and then later under-delivering which leaves a sour taste and thereby makes one suspicious of any claims of promise for the next experience. When done correctly though it is powerful. As a VC you are there to judge the potential promise and invest if you see it as powerful.
