Rhode Island may be small, but as anyone who lives here knows, we punch well above our weight. This is especially true when it comes to supporting our national defense.

General Dynamics Electric Boat, which has facilities at Quonset Point and in Newport, is the primary manufacturer of submarines for the Navy and brings much pride to our state. For nearly two decades, hull fabrication for Virginia-class submarines has taken place primarily in Rhode Island, a testament to the hard work and excellence of the men and women who make up our defense industrial base and who work so hard to provide boats that help keep our nation safe and secure.

I was on hand for the keel laying of the 20th Virginia class sub, the USS Oregon. I was proud to be joined at the celebration by not only Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Governor Raimondo, but also many of the brave men and women who serve in the Navy.

The technological advances and innovations that have gone into the design and production of these vessels are extraordinary Submarines are truly the unsung heroes of the fleet, and are a bedrock of our future national security.

All 6,000 attendees of the keel laying could feel the pride and excitement in the room. The USS Oregon will be one of the most capable and advanced vessels in the world, and I look forward to hearing about her long and distinguished service to our nation.
