Many years ago when I served on the board of an executive education industry association I would occasionally hear one of my board colleagues, from some of the most prestigious MBA schools in the world, talk about “Dean’s Admits”. I had no idea what they were talking about and finally asked. Yes, these were the candidates who normally would be denied admission, but a note had come down from the Dean’s office demanding that they be accepted, usually because of Daddy’s donation to the school. I certainly understood the Dean’s motives, but felt sorry for the kids who would never know what the real world was like, and who would eventually be despised by their future classmates, who would know within weeks how they got in.
