Many Startups Overlook Product Vision
I’ve been advising startups for some time, and I’ve seen a pattern that’s bothering me. It’s not the “we’re solving real problems” pattern or “we’re going to build a market and world changing product” pattern.
It’s different all together. The pattern is, “Seeing the end from the beginning.” You know — the big picture — product vision.
You may have a strategy in place that’s product focused, but it’s usually about technology, delivery and releasing stuff.
Do you have a simple product vision? Is it socialized with your team? Can you easily discuss it with those who don’t know you and what you’re trying to do? Would investors understand it, and get excited about what you’re doing and consider investing?
If not, get busy.
Below are three things that work well in creating product vision —
First, write down what you are thinking today, tomorrow and next year. Second, socialize this with anyone and everyone you know. While this might be your venture, there’s a lot of people willing to listen and provide feedback that may have travelled this path before. And finally, update the product vision at least once a month with what you learn and discover. If you have an established (marketable) product, do this at least once a quarter.
Let me know how it goes. I’d enjoy hearing about your product vision journey.
