You Cannot Balance Grace With Law…

Reading Mark 2 this morning and ran into this, (my comment in parenthesis),

“And no one puts new wine (grace) into old wine skins (law). For the wine would burst the wine skins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins”.

The thought?

You cannot balance grace with law…

We all know there has been a change in our relationship to the law since the cross. And as a result no one in the church, for the most part, teaches pure law…but what often DOES remain is a subtle, subversive mixture of law and grace. And I get that,

I mean maybe some think a “pinch” of law “balances” grace.

But you CANNOT balance grace with law anymore than you can mix oil and water, Jesus says you cannot pour new wine (grace) into old wineskins (law) because…you lose them both:

It’s why Paul so ferociously went after “Galatianism” in the New Testament…because it is essentially a mixture of two covenants.

And with that you have a hybrid gospel, which is really no gospel at all. No wonder Paul was so concerned…because the Galatians were turning away from the “grace of Christ” to “a different gospel”.

And today God is on the move as well. I believe we are part of a wonderful, radical, global “unmixing” of grace and law;

That is, a radical discontinuity with a “do to get” gospel , a grace “AND” gospel, a “pursue your own righteousness” gospel.

It’s all being undone by a tidal wave of grace, the gospel of grace that Jesus EMBODIES, HIS righteousness now ours, our love for people HIS love for people! This is huge…and TIMELY because EVERYTHING IS CHANGING, the harvest is massive…we haven’t seen anything yet.

Romans 5:20 “Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, GRACE abounded much more”.
