Coding Dojo Application & Interview

I decided to apply to Coding Dojo around 1PM today, and I finished the interview at 4:10PM today. If anything, at least Coding Dojo has a quick response time.

The application took about 10 minutes to complete. It included simple, straightforward things, like your name and address, and an optional resume. After submitting the application, I was redirected to a page with 2 videos advertising Coding Dojo’s beliefs (“anyone can code”), complete with students writing for-loops on whiteboards and using Sublime. Once finished, I could schedule an appointment anytime, and I made it later that afternoon, because why not?

The interview was short, about 7 minutes. The interviewer sounded busy, and the connection must have been pretty bad because I had to repeat myself multiple times. He asked some general questions, didn’t ask any puzzles or logic questions, and announced that I’d get my results by email within 2–3 days. I probably didn’t get accepted, but that’s OK. Anyways, onto the actual interview questions.

Tell me about yourself. What kind of coding experience have you had prior?
How many hours have you coded in the last month?
What was it (your previous job) like?
How many people did you work with?
Why did you choose Coding Dojo?

I mentioned I had only coded about 40 hours in the past month (the honest answer, though if I am rejected, I suspect this is the reason). I had just come back from Japan, and coding wasn’t high on my list of priorities. I mentioned that to the interviewer, and he asked me what Japan was like. I mentioned the friendly people, and he seemed to like the whole “small community, supportive atmosphere” answer. He asked how many people I worked with, and seemed surprised when I answered, “About 100 teachers.” I’m not sure why he was surprised. I did go to 5 schools, each with their own teachers and needing their own lesson plan.

Overall, it was fine. We didn’t click, but I didn’t go slack-jawed or silent either. I’m mostly disappointed that I didn’t get a logic question. The puzzles are the best part! Oh well. Maybe another time.
