‘Fun Palace’ Cedric Price
‘A Fun Palace full of activities defined by pieces of architecture’
Cedric Price is one of the most influential architects in the late 20th century. He aims to focus on the forever changing external environment with the concept of social interactions. ‘But what is generally absent in even the most elaborately illustrated building is the way human figures will occupy it.’ (Evans 2011, p.56–57) Evan’s statement was similar to what Cedric did, that was, his idea of ‘Fun Palace’ project in how a sense of dynamic movement in the vast mechanism and the direction of the object’s movement in the building could establish a changing/ transformed space.

I was inspired by Cedric’s technique on how he transformed a forever changing external environment to a space that people could interact in their own way. And I have chosen the State library NSW as my public space for a fundamental building. I used ink pen and illustrated with different density between lines to show distance and hence to create space. Moreover, to juxtapose, I exaggerated people’s interaction comparing to how they normally act in a library. Movement such as playing around with books, burning books, exercising, flying kite, or even a hot air balloon, etc. Now the library is no longer being as a boring place but with fun, and no rules, people can eat and do whatever they want within a public space even through it is a library. And I believe, Price will stage the same way as what I did as well. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the outcome of my drawing that it links well with Price, the way how he transformed a building by people interactions and gave a sense of freedom for them to explore the place as well as to fully utilise the space.
